CONNECTING: Office Hours with Jason E. Klein, MBA 1986, Founder and CEO of On Grid Ventures

Jason E. Klein is an experienced media CEO and builder of digital and traditional businesses who has led two successful turnarounds.  He is founder and CEO of On Grid Ventures LLC, an advisory and investment firm in digital media, marketing, and marketplaces; Chairman of Harvard Business School Alumni Angels of Greater New York; NY Region Partner for Yard Ventures; a Managing Director at Empirical Media; a member of New York Angels; and a mentor at several NYC-area incubators.  Mr. Klein is on the advisory board for Shoppable (formerly 72Lux), the leading e-commerce solution for publishers, and PageScience.  Mr. Klein was President and CEO of NNN, the leading national network for local media, and Mr. Klein led its expansion from a focus on daily print newspapers to a full line provider of scalable, integrated marketing solutions encompassing web, mobile, and tablet formats; targeted hyperlocal and suburban properties; and Hispanic and other ethnic segments.  NNN is a limited partnership of 25 of the largest U.S. local media companies including Tribune, Gannett, Hearst, Advance Newhouse, New York Times, and the Washington Post; and serves blue chip clients such as Procter & Gamble and IBM.  Under Mr. Klein’s leadership, NNN delivered record results and led in the use of media effectiveness metrics.

Prior to NNN, Mr. Klein was CEO of Times Mirror Magazines, a leading magazine publisher with $300 million in revenue and 25 titles including Golf Magazine, Popular Science, Transworld Skateboarding, and Skiing; and leading vertical digital properties including, and  Mr. Klein joined the company as President and Group Publisher of Field & Stream and Outdoor Life magazines, and oversaw their turnaround from losses to the most profitable magazines in the company.  Mr. Klein ran Times Mirror Magazines when its parent company was sold to Tribune in 2000, oversaw the divestiture of Times Mirror Magazines to Time Inc. for $475 million, and ran the integration into Time Inc. and rebranding as Time4 Media.

He is a founder of, an aggregator of medical information for professionals, now owned by Elsevier.  He also founded Healthy Living Media, a private-equity backed venture, with North Castle Partners.  Mr. Klein ran strategic development for Times Mirror’s medical and professional division where he completed the acquisition of 15 companies in two years, including building a consumer health information sector.  Mr. Klein is a former management consultant with McKinsey where he developed growth and turnaround strategies for media and consumer goods companies.  Mr. Klein’s clients included television networks, consumer packaged goods companies, magazine publishers, and department stores.  Mr. Klein began his career at Bain & Company in Menlo Park, CA, as an associate consultant focused on consumer goods, technology, and health care.

Mr. Klein holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and an AB from Dartmouth College, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa and Magna Cum Laude in computer science. He is on the board and executive committee of the New York City Police Foundation, and is an officer of the Harvard Business School Club of New York.  Mr. Klein is the immediate past Chairman of the Editorial Board of the Dartmouth Alumni Magazine, and a past board member of the Magazine Publishers of America (now the Association of Magazine Media) and the American Advertising Federation. Mr. Klein was recognized by Media Magazine as one of “100 People to Know” in the media industry, and by Alley Watch as one of “25 Angel Investors in New York You Need to Know.”  He can be found on twitter as @JKNews.
